Residence for the elderly with multi-sensory room
Snoezelen room in Terni
Reducing behavioural disorders
We have developed a professional approach to both pharmacological and non-pharmacological dementia therapies in our protected residence with the creation of a Snoezelen Room in Terni.
The multisensory stimulation in the Snoezelen Room that we wanted to set up represents the first example of a complete non-pharmacological care pathway in Umbria.
The main goal of non-pharmacological therapies is the reduction of certain behavioural disorders with consequent reduction of the pharmacological load, and thus a real improvement in quality of life.
In patients undergoing such treatment, an improvement in behavioural disorders, particularly apathy, eating disorders, wandering, logorrhoea and agitation, has been shown.
Research conducted by the University of Dundee has found that practical applications of the Snoezelen therapeutic and educational approach have specific benefits for different types of users: individuals with cognitive disabilities, psychiatric problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism, for acute and chronic pain control, and in the case of stroke and head injury outcomes.
